Jagmeet Singh Leader of Canada’s NDP issued the following statement:
“Today we honour the legacy of the workers' movement and celebrate the millions of people around the world who have fought tirelessly for workers’ rights.
Through their struggle, we gained significant wins like a minimum wage, access to pensions and employment security.
But the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the troubling gaps in our social nets that must be addressed.
Front line and essential workers have been going to work, risking their lives every day to deliver the services Canadians depend on. Many of those workers don’t have access to paid sick leave, a liveable wage or affordable and reliable childcare. Women and racialized workers have been hit particularly hard in this pandemic. New Democrats are committed to continue to fight for better and permanent access to paid sick leave, for a liveable wage and for a universal, affordable, and reliable childcare.
While the Liberals choose to work for the ultra-rich by refusing to make them pay their fair share of the recovery, New Democrats are in it for you. We will continue to stand side-by-side with workers and fight for your rights and ensure that the recovery doesn’t fall on the shoulders of workers and their families.
We are in it for you. Happy International Workers’ Day!”
