BRAMPTON, ON – At its Committee of Council meeting on May 26th, Brampton Councillors unanimously passed a motion moved by Regional Councillor Gurpreet Singh Dhillon requesting the province to commence immediate and strict action against vehicles with modified muffler exhausts that lead to excessive noise and smoke, which in turn cause disturbances in residential neighborhoods.
Councillor Dhillon’s motion calls for section 75.1 of the Highway Traffic Act to be proclaimed and brought into force immediately, as it was passed and given royal assent in December 2019. When in effect, it would make it an offence to tamper with motor vehicles by:
(a) removing, bypassing, defeating or rendering inoperative all or part of a motor vehicle’s emission control system or;
(b) modifying a motor or vehicle in any way that results in increased emissions from the level to which it was originally designed or certified by the manufacturer of the motor or vehicle;
The motion also requests the province to regulate the sale and use of exhaust systems to only those that do not exceed the sound level of 80 decibels; and for financial support from the province to provide police with decibel monitoring devices to enforce this new regulation.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to all Brampton area Members of Provincial Parliament, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Peel Regional Police, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada for their information.
Quote:
Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Regional Councillor:
“This Council has heard the complaints of residents loud and clear, and recognizes the need to ensure our neighbourhoods are free from unnecessary noise pollution. I am hopeful that the province listens to our request to enact immediate measures as quickly as possible.”
